Torn Apart by Judy Rickard

ISBN: 978-1-84409-548-3
United by Love, Divided by Law, 256 pages paperback
Foreword by Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat, Pray, Love)
The uphill battle that thousands of lesbian and gay couples face are described in these moving stories about immigration, injustice, and love. As Judy and Karin's story shows, when only one person in a gay couple is an American citizen, it is virtually impossible to obtain legal residence for the other partner. The result is that families are ripped apart, children are separated from their parents, gravely ill people die alone in the hospital, careers are abandoned, and relationships are strained to the breaking point.

Organizations working to stop this situation are listed as resources. The good work that has been done is woven into the pages to give you hope when you may be drowning in despair.

    Judy Rickard
In her late 50’s, Judy Rickard met and fell in love with her beloved Karin—who is not a U.S. citizen. In order to keep her family together, Judy had to retire early from her job of nearly 30 years at San José State University and take to the road to be with Karin. Their story is not over—and their challenges are not over. In fact, writing this book and making it public may make it impossible for Judy and Karin to be together in America. But their dedication to the cause galvanized them and they want to help fix a system that discriminates against lesbians and gay men from America who fall in love with lesbians and gay men from other countries.

"Thousands of same-sex binational couples are kept apart by U.S. immigration policies that don't just fail to recognize that two people of the same gender can have a positive, fulfilling and committed relationship, but actually target the non-citizen half of such couples as a security risk.
