Learning Little Hawk's Way of Storytelling by Little Hawk, Miller & Cipriani

ISBN: 978-1-84409-536-0
A renowned storyteller shares his narrative wisdom, 192 pages paperback

Based on the teachings of Kenneth Little Hawk, the renowned Mi’kmaw/Mohawk First Nation storyteller, this book uses stories to explain how to tell stories. Business people looking to enhance their public speaking, librarians wanting to enliven children’s programs, and teachers trying to instill a love of story in their students will find the entertaining and educative methods in this guide both inspiring and effective.

The beauty of this book is in its simplicity and Little Hawk’s talent for communicating the uncomplicated lessons of a story and illustrating the importance of paying attention to each teaching point. These lessons are in the stories themselves, and practical skills and techniques are each illustrated through relevant stories from native tribes—“What the Fire Taught Us” teaches special effects, “Our Many Children” shows voice modulation, and “Little Thunder’s Wedding” offers techniques for formal stories.

Little Hawk, Miller & Cipriani

Kenneth Little Hawk is a Native American storyteller, keynote speaker, recording artist, and actor. He has performed at the White House, the Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Museum of Natural History and has been hired as a speaker by such corporations as PepsiCo, AT&T, Verizon, and Sony as well as by government agencies. He appeared in two award-winning Ken Burns documentaries and has been featured in major publications such as the New York Times.

Frank Domenico Cipriani has written locally on four continents. Seeking his fortune in Argentina during the 1980's, he published two books in Spanish. Upon returning to the US, he became involved in Primitive Survival, spent eighteen years as a full-time home schooling father, and started a nonprofit organization that took children on 200-plus mile walkabouts, planted over 3,000 trees and taught seminars on bedtime storytelling, and ran storytelling workshops in the forest with Kenneth Little Hawk and Beverly Miller. His organization was featured in Weird NJ magazine, and recognized by then-senator Barack Obama in 2007. He lives near the Jersey shore with his family of ten. He writes a weekly column for a paper in Bangladesh, and publishes a column for the Riverside Signal called "You Think What You Think and I'll Think What I know." He was recognized by the State of New Jersey as the county's volunteer of the year in 2009, and has won several awards for Childrens' empowerment.

I absolutely loved this book! If you enjoy storytelling and you enjoy Native American ways of living, then this is a book for you. It is based on the teachings of Kenneth Little Hawk, a renowned storyteller, and it uses stories to explain to you how to tell stories. These stories can be read on many levels – to entertain, to teach culture and living in a good way, to show respect for our Earth or to learn the ancient art of storytelling.
